  Activity/Product Description

The 2022 SLO target requires that 2.5 million smallholders have access to sustainable feeds and production methods. This target is developed along two lines: (a)local feed mills must be capable and produce appropriate local balanced feeds which don’t compete with human or animal feed and (b)novel feeding strategies must be developed enabling low protein inputs without production losses. The first line requires that local producers have access to detailed information on the nutritional value of local ingredients and nutrient requirements of fish. In 2019 we will develop an online repository of these data and train local producers to use this database. The nutrient composition and the digestibility of a selection of priority ingredients will be assessed. Because ingredient quality may vary strongly, samples of these ingredients will be collected in different seasons and regions and stored in a bio-bank at WUR until further analysis. In addition, experiments on lysine and/or phosphorus requirements of tilapia will be initiated. The second line requires developing feeds that generate proper C:N ratios in ponds. In 2019, this concept will be investigated for carp polyculture ponds and validated for tilapia in Bangladesh, Zambia, Egypt and/or Vietnam
