  Activity/Product Description

Disease is the major bottleneck to aquaculture. Research during 2019 and beyond will identify key yield limiting diseases for genetically improved tilapia (e,g, GIFT, Abbassa) through deployment of mobile platform enabled innovative surveillance tools in breeding nucleus, multiplication centers and farming systems in Bangladesh, Egypt and Zambia. Fish population based epidemiological research under diverse agro-ecological conditions will be used to assess economic and social impacts of key diseases of improved tilapia and identify risk factors enabling development of management interventions. Research with partners will be further strengthened in the areas of patho-microbiomes, development of pond-side diagnostic tools, evaluating the effectiveness of health products used, understanding drivers for antibiotic usage and AMR emergence in tilapia farming systems. Our research will lead to application of epidemiological and diagnostic tools to inform hatcheries, local service providers and public services for better management of carp and tilapia diseases in focal countries and elsewhere, with the direct effect of increasing production and disease risk reduction for fish farmers.
