  Activity/Product Description

The proposed activities under Product 1 deliver research and development outcomes for the Sustainable Aquaculture Flagship of FISH CRP, with reference to Cluster 3 (Aquaculture Systems). The goal is to generate an increased understanding of the impacts of existing and improved aquaculture systems and technologies, with the view to identifying appropriate ways to enhance their contribution to: (1) increased productivity and profitability; (2) increased and equitable income and employment opportunities; (2) reduced poverty and increased resilience to covariate climatic shocks; and (3) reduced adverse impacts on the environment to sustain future fish production. The research combines several approaches including baseline data collection, cost-benefit analysis, life cycle assessment, randomized evaluation, and econometric techniques to assess the performance of aquaculture systems and technologies under different agro-ecological, socio-economic and cultural contexts of developing countries. The research delivers tools and methodologies for performance assessment of aquaculture systems and technologies, insights on the synergies and trade-offs associated with adoption of such systems and technologies, and recommendations on potential interventions to maximize the synergies and minimize the trade-offs. The research activities are targeted for implementation in Bangladesh and Myanmar with possible extension to Egypt, India, and Cambodia in 2019. To 2022, the developed approach will be applied to all FISH focal and scaling countries to assess farm-level performance of tilapia and carps aquaculture systems.
