  Description

Fish in Food Systems activities focus on research with regional perspectives that will be critical to sustain and transform the role of fisheries in poverty reduction and food and nutrition security. The work will focus on the African Great Lakes, Pacific and the Mekong regions. Research draws in knowledge generated in and expertise from associated focal countries – but provides regional and systems perspective. We will examine how domestic and intraregional trade affects capture fisheries production, resource exploitation and the distribution of livelihood and nutrition benefits of fish – as such, this Cluster provides an important point of integration with the WorldFish Value Chains and Nutrition program and the Aquaculture Flagship/Program through Cluster 3. Ultimately research developed on fish in the food system across the three regions will – through more precise and SSF-sensitive foresight analysis, data-backed and participatory scenarios and systems/regional/multi-country analysis of flows of nutrients and values - guide policy to better account for food production, climate change, economic development and demographic change. Cluster 3 identifies the macro-scale barriers and opportunities for fisheries focused innovations from Clusters 1 and 2 to have regional impact within broader food systems. Research is developed and interpreted through partnerships and convened dialogue to ensure relevance and legitimacy sufficient to challenge and guide the ways in which fish from SSF is positioned in fish-agri food systems at larger scales. Scenarios of fish in nutrition-sensitive food systems will be developed through joint analysis with FP1 and with global integrating programs within relevant agro-ecological systems. Fish in Food Systems research and development will value fish in the wider system, across value chains, landscapes and settings. The cluster includes three research activities (3.1, 3.2 and 3.3) that together will provide leading research for development on fish in food systems.
