  Activity/Product Description

Sustaining and increasing the contribution of coastal resources to poverty reduction and food and nutrition security has eluded centralised and economically framed forms of fisheries management. The dispersed nature of SSF populations and resources points to decentralised approaches that build security for fishers in existing tenure systems – yet there remains only case-specific evidence that community-based and co-management leads to equitable and measurable improvements in fisheries systems sufficient to secure food and nutrition benefits, and improve human well-being (alleviate poverty) more broadly. Similarly, there is very limited evidence that livelihood development initiatives applied within SSF and SSF communities have led to lasting improvements to incomes, well-being or poverty reduction. And localised improvements are not able to be sustained within or through broader social and environmental change. The challenge we seek to address in coastal fisheries systems is to build on strengths (while recognising limitations) of local governance and livelihood systems to enhance, at scales beyond local, equity and adaptive capacity, environmental sustainability and ultimately to reduce poverty and improve food security.
