  Activity/Product Description

The success and impact of breeding program depends in their developing improved strains that are relevant to users. Aquaculture markets can be strongly segmented and there can be differences in trait preferences among users dependent upon their role in the value chain and a range of socio-economic factors. The proposed research activities assess the trait preferences of users taking account of gender (broad sense definition) in order to ensure relevant traits are selected in tilapia and carp genetic improvement programs. In each of these cases the improvements are a step towards producing new technologies that help to achieve sustainable intensification of aquaculture production and that are relevant to target populations. They will assist in generating increased productivity, income, employment, food and nutrition security, while decreasing environmental impact.
