  Activity/Product Description

Understanding the main factors that constrain seed change and varietal replacement of improved non-hybrid seed varieties, with all the institution and technological innovations that have taken place in the recent decades, is critical in design of projects and programs aimed at scaling benefits to the small-scale farmers. The significant contribution women make to the choice, availability and management of non-hybrid seeds/varieties in smallholder farming systems, and how this intersects with policy, institutional changes, gender norms in community and entrepreneurship needs to be documented and different models tested for enhancing knowledge and behaviour change that leads to adoption of improved materials among women farmers in smallholder systems. The communication approach and narrative used in the non-hybrid seeds systems dissemination needs to be reviewed based on contextualised needs and practices of women in smallholder systems. This pilot study has the potential to impact on technological and institutional innovations around non-hybrid seed systems in small holder systems of the world and contribute significantly to the cross CRPs learning as well as contribute to the general CGIAR wide mission of reducing poverty, inclusion of women and youth and enhancing nutrition security, which also maps significantly to the global SDGs.
