Activity/Product Description
Groundnut is a high energy food because of its high oil content and a rich source of minerals and Vitamins as well. There is increased utilization of groundnuts, and therefore it is critical for breeders to consider market traits in addition to yield and resistance to stresses. The objective of this work is therefore to develop high yielding resilient varieties that are resistance to foliar diseases and with market traits to serve different market segments. This activity will aim at improving materials mainly for output traits (line improvement) while using existing populations and or early generation materials as parents for improvement. The key activities will include making new crosses, advancement of populations and evaluation of advanced breeding lines to test for adaptability and in preparation for release in the East and Southern Africa.
