Innovation TitleGenetic markers (SNPs) for identifying improved tilapia strains in Asia
Innovation description Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified and a low density panel of several hundred were developed using samples from core breeding programs of several improved tilapia strains used in Asia. This panel successfully distinguished the different strains and was used to identify the strains used in a large sample of hatcheries (about 100 in each country) in Bangladesh and the Philippines, providing a tool to assess seed supply in Asia.

Year (Stage)2020
Stage DescriptionThe set of genetic markers has been used successfully by WorldFish to identify fish in hatcheries in Bangladesh and the Philippines with the results published and the data identifying the markers made public. This means the markers are accessible and available for others to use.
