Innovation TitleSolar-social innovations to reduce waste and loss, increase incomes and improve equity in capture fisheries systems
Innovation description The use of solar technology offers opportunities to reduce value and quality losses experienced in fisheries value chains. FISH research illustrates when solar-based initiatives are developed through action research and combined with social innovations (particularly gender transformative or gender sensitive approaches) complementary outcomes ranging from increased gender equity, reduction of fish quality loss and increased likelihood of sustainability.

Stage of InnovationStage 1: discovery/proof of concept
Year (Stage)2018
Stage DescriptionIn Zambia and Malawi solar drying technologies were successfully piloted applying action research with men, women, and mixed groups - published research findings detail the outcomes. Proof of concept stage in Solomon Islands solar technologies has been successfully - with social, ecological and economic outcomes are the subject of 2019 evaluation.
