Innovation TitleA co-management strategy for Lake Fisheries
Innovation description Lake fisheries provide an important source of micro nutrients, animal protein and livelihoods. Lake Nasser in Upper Egypt provides a case of a critical yet under performing fishery i.e., stocks are overfished and catches are decreasing. Building on earlier recommendations, WorldFish conducted a further assessment in 2017 to design and formalize an ecosystem-based, co-management approach to manage and rebuild the fishery (including using restocking techniques).

Year (Stage)2018
Stage DescriptionA research-informed management plan was designed and finalized, and endorsed by the local fisheries authority (GAFRD). In 2018-2019 an action plan is in development, led by GAFRD, advised by FISH researchers. Research on success of piloting will lead to adjustment in Lake Nasser in 2019/2020, and recommendation for other Lake Fisheries in Africa.
